Homemade Detergents?

While surfing the web for sewing patterns I happened to stumble upon a website for making your own laundry detergent. I'm pretty excited to try it. They claim it works equally as well as Tide and costs 1/50th of the price. Another thing that appeals to me is that is seems more eco-friendly. Also, I'm paranoid about the chemicals they put in shampoos, detergents, soaps, ect. Upon further research I also found a 'recipe' for making your own dish detergent and hand soap. Anyone else want to experiment with making some of these things? I'll be curious to know what you think!

I'm so with you on this, Alicia! I'm always trying to find new ways to help our budget and I also don't like all the chemicals cleaning agents bring into our house. I will give the dishwashing detergent and the hand soap a try when we run out of our current stash. I'll let you know how it goes! I'm interested to see how these things work for you.

We made laundry and dish detergent at an enrichment a while ago, but I missed it... so I am so happy you posted this info! I am totally going to try it out. I third the notion of not using so many chemicals... when I clean, I prefer using things like vinegar & baking soda.

I am very interested in this too Alicia ... I have one question though ... is there a place you can buy the borax locally? Or in other words is it something you can find easily without having to order it online?

They have the borax many places. I bought some at Wal-Mart and it was only $2 or $3, but I haven't been able to find the soda ash/sodium carbonate/washing soda yet. They had a huge thing in the pool section of WalMart but it was $30! So, I'm still looking for that one. Let me know if you find it :)
